Security door questions, answered.
They come from different systems. The European EN 1627 standard rates a door's burglary resistance on a single scale, RC1 to RC6, based on how long it withstands escalating tools. UL standards are American and more specialized — UL 752, for example, rates ballistic (bullet) resistance, while fire performance uses UL 10C. A door can carry one rating and not another, so we always match the certification to the threat you actually face.
For most family homes, RC2 is widely considered the right balance — it resists the small hand tools opportunistic burglars carry and buys those critical first few minutes. RC3 is a smart step up for high-crime areas or homes with valuable contents. Anything above RC3 is generally more than a residence needs, both in protection and budget.
Often, yes — many doors are engineered to carry both a burglary rating and a fire rating in one product. But the capabilities don't transfer automatically; each must be independently certified for its specific configuration. We'll confirm exactly what a given door is rated for before you commit.
